Community-Owned Forests

In 2005, the Communities Committee, together with several other sponsoring organizations, held a conference on Community-Owned Forests: Possibilities, Experiences and Lessons Learned. The conference brought together citizens, managers and researchers from communities across the United States, as well as Canada and Eastern Europe, to discuss opportunities and challenges of community-owned forests. This website is the result of that conference, and provides a resource to bring together people in towns and cities to learn and share information, experiences and wisdom about owning and managing community forests.

DVDs of the Community-Owned Forests Conference, including presentations and tours, are available for $60 for a 12 DVD set. Please click here, to order a set.

On this website, you will find examples of community-owned forests in action; funding sources for acquiring and managing community-owned forests; a library of more in-depth case studies, newspaper articles, and how-to's for acquiring and managing community-owned forests; and links to websites for several community-owned forests, as well as to other websites with information and resources on forest management.
